Until 1939 Thailand was called ‘the Kingdom of Siam’. Through the centuries Thailand has been free of colonial domination. In spite of occupations and invasions, it has always been able to establish and develop its own, very rich, culture. This is a fact that the Thai people themselves are exceptionally proud of.

The name Thailand or Muang Thai is mostly interpreted as ‘country of the free people’. Although this is not linguistically correct, it is widely accepted as an alternative meaning.
Although ongoing westernization and globalization have their influence on Thailand, the local resources and the exotic culture have been affected less than in most other countries in the region. Many changes took place in the 20th Century, but most of these changes are only really noticeable in the capital Bangkok, which is a huge Metropolis. In the rural areas of this beautiful tropical country, traditional life and culture have been preserved very well. This is especially visible in many of the fascinating temples and the skilful handcrafts.
Most people who visit Thailand for the first time really experience what can best be described as ‘culture shock’. The impressive and rich Buddhist temple complexes, monks in saffron colored robes and impressive landscapes are almost overwhelming. But most striking is the nature of the people, their warm and genuine smiles and the fantastic hospitality, which make Thailand to one of the most popular holiday destinations in the region. The friendliness of the population also has earned the country the name ‘the land of smiles’.
