World’s first set of male twin elephants born in Thailand

The rare pair were born two hours apart to a cheering crowd in the rural area of Tha Lad in Surin, Thailand.

Thong-Kum and Thong-Tang, believed to be the world’s first set of male twins, are just two-weeks old and are reported to be in a healthy condition.

One onlooker had travelled from a local town just to see the rare phenomenon. “I can’t believe there are twin elephants, I have heard they are so rare,” she said.

Elephant twins occur very rarely, and due to the nutritional needs placed on the mother, their survival rates are often low.

Thailand’s other pair of elephant twins, females Jim and Joom, were born in 1993, but one sadly died nine-years-ago.

In January 2005, twin elephants were born in Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa. They were the third twins to be born in the history of the park.

Twin elephants were also born in Chitwan National Park, Nepal, in 2009. Again they were the third set to be born there in the history of Chitwan.

Elephants in Thailand are held in high esteem and are a national symbol, although their population has plummeted from 100,000 at the beginning of the 20th century to around 4,000 today.

Superstar Lin Ping gets new home

Panda cub and celebrity Lin Ping yesterday moved into her new Bt20-million home at the Chiang Mai Zoo, while the government plans to ask China to let her stay here for two more years.

Zoological Park Organisation director Sophon Damnui presided over the ceremony to release the 30-kilogram panda, which was born at the zoo 10 months ago, into her own 300-square-meter exhibit.

He also said Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti would be in Beijing from April 7-9 to ask that country’s Forestry Department to amend the agreement to extend Lin Ping’s stay and request a permanent panda research centre in Chiang Mai.

By April 10, they should have an answer, which is expected to be positive, Sophon added.

Elektriciteit
De netspanning in het gehele land bedraagt 220 Volt. Er is soms een adapter nodig, in verband met andersoortige stopcontacten. Bij de meeste hotels kunt u een adapter krijgen, indien nodig.

Fooien
Zeker in de hotels en restaurants zijn alle rekeningen inclusief. Als u uw tevredenheid wilt tonen is een bedrag van circa 10% een goede suggestie.

Fotografie/film/video
Neem voldoende materiaal vanuit Nederland mee. Thailand is een waar paradijs om te filmen en te fotograferen. Men is gewend aan toeristen die gebouwen en mensen fotograferen; vraag echter bij close-ups altijd om toestemming. Militaire gebouwen en luchthavens mogen niet gefotografeerd worden .

Leidingwater
Wij raden u af om kraanwater te drinken. U kunt er wel met een gerust hart uw tanden mee poetsen. Overal, ook onderweg, is mineraalwater of ‘drinking water’ in flessen te koop.

Inentingen
Officieel is voor een bezoek aan Thailand geen enkele vaccinatie verplicht. Wel worden de volgende vaccinaties aangeraden: DTP en Hepatitis A. Wij raden u aan contact op te nemen met huisarts, GGD of de Travel Clinic te Rotterdam (tel. 0900 – 5034090) voor advies over de vaccinaties. Thailand wordt aangegeven als malariavrij (met uitzondering van de dichtbeboste gebieden aan de grenzen met Birma en Cambodja, maar het meenemen van muggenolie met DEET tegen muggensteken is aan te bevelen.

Kleding
Wij adviseren lichte, katoenen zomerkleding. Ook uw zwemkleding zult u zeker nodig hebben. Bij een eventueel bezoek aan een tempel dient u er rekening mee te houden dat knieën en schouders bedekt zijn.

Paspoort
Een geldig paspoort is vereist. Dat dient bij terugkomst nog minimaal 6 maanden geldig te zijn.

Taal
In Thailand kan men zich in de toeristische gebieden over het algemeen met Engels uitstekend redden.

Telefoneren
Vanuit Nederland: 00 draaien, dan het landnummer van Thailand 66, het kengetal zonder 0 en daarna het abonneenummer draaien.

Vanuit Thailand draait u eerst 001, dan het landnummer van Nederland, 31, daarna het kengetal zonder 0 en dan het abonneenummer. Uw mobiele telefoon functioneert in Thailand. Voor gesprekken binnen Thailand verdient het aanbeveling om in dit land een aparte sim-kaart te kopen. Dat is een stuk voordeliger.

Tijdsverschil
In de zomer is het in Thailand 5 uur later en in de winter 6 uur.

Valuta
100 Baht is ongeveer € 2,00 waard. In de toeristische gebieden zijn pinautomaten (ATM) te vinden en bij banken en hotels kunt u geld wisselen. Uiteraard is de koers van de bank gunstiger dan in het hotel. Creditcards worden in de hotels, restaurants en grotere winkels vrijwel overal geaccepteerd .

Het is toegestaan de Thaise munteenheid, de Baht, in te voeren (maximaal $ 10.000) of uit te voeren (maximaal 50.000 Baht).
